Ruppersberger Issues Statement on Passage of Bipartisan Legislation to Avoid Fiscal Cliff
Bipartisan bill headed to President’s desk for signature
(Washington, DC) – Congressman C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger tonight released the following statement on the passage of bipartisan legislation to avoid the fiscal cliff:
“The real winners tonight are the American people, who always wanted Congress to work together for the best interest of the nation. Finally – in one of our last acts of this session – we showed that we can, in fact, compromise. This bipartisan bill is an important step in preventing what many economists believed would throw our country back into recession. We were able to permanently extend tax cuts to the middle class and avoid the fiscal cliff.
But it’s also a first step. We have much more work to do to reduce spending and our deficit, restructure entitlement programs that protect our seniors and get our country back on solid footing. I am hopeful that in the next Congress, such compromises will be the norm rather than the exception as we continue to work together on common sense solutions to these critical issues.”
